The Quest for the World Teacher

Chapter 1: The Alignment of Stars

The year was 1875, and it was time to prepare humanity for the arrival of the master. Helena Blavatsky, a Russian lady who could communicate with spirits, discovered that Buddha was ready for his next avatar (incarnation). According to Mahayana Buddhism, one of the branches of Buddhism, Maitreya[1] was expected to be the next Buddha to be born on the planet.

Annie Besant, a renowned social reformer, intellectual, and eloquent speaker residing in the UK, came across a book titled ‘The Secret Doctrine,’ penned by Blavatsky. So profound was the impact of the book that Besant sought to meet its author. She ventured to the Himalayas, where Blavatsky resided. There, these two influential figures met, setting the stage for a historic chapter, not just impacting their lives but many on the globe.

Helena, in collaboration with others[2], established an organisation named ‘The Theosophical Society’ in New York. It is believed that this initiative was inspired by Master Kuthumi[3], a sage from the Himalayas, who communicated with her spiritually. Another influential figure, Pandit Subba Rao, a Hindu guru, persuaded Helena to relocate the organization’s headquarters to Adyar, near Chennai. The society aimed to encourage the comparative study of religion, philosophy, and science, and to promote brotherhood without discrimination. One of its main objectives was also to identify an individual, a vehicle, through whom Maitreya (Buddha) could be brought onto the planet. This person would then become the teacher of the world, a global spiritual teacher, across religion, country, caste, beliefs and colour.

In 1890, Charles Webster Leadbeater[4], from England, joined the Theosophical movement. It was said that Leadbeater possessed unique abilities, allowing him to perceive an individual’s past lives and predict their future. Authoring more than 60 books in his lifetime, he attributed these powers to his guru, Kuthumi, and the practice of a specific meditation technique known as Kundalini, centered on the seven chakras, as he revealed in his autobiography.

The stage was set and the right individuals united in the mission to identify the ideal candidate – a vessel to facilitate the arrival of Maitreya, who was destined to become a world teacher. According to Mahayana Buddhism, once Maitreya reveals himself in physical form, he would establish a new dharma[5], a new spiritual establishment that is expected to endure for the next 180,000 years.

The Quest

The quest to find the world teacher commenced on a global scale. The Mahatmas, Maurya[6] and Kuthumi, channeled Maitreya’s messages to Helena, providing guidance for the team in their pursuit. Helena has mentioned this in her books that both Kuthumi and Maurya used to work for Maitreya. Meanwhile, Charles Leadbeater made the significant decision to abandon his Anglican roots and relocate to Adyar, aligning himself more closely with the project. His desire was to be nearer to his Master, Kuthumi, to facilitate his spiritual progression.

In 1909, Charles Leadbeater was walking on the banks of the Adyar River when he spotted a 14-year-old boy. Leadbeater perceived the perfect aura in this boy, one that radiated love for everyone. He informed the team that the individual they had been seeking across the globe was located right next to the headquarters of the Theosophical Society. The person who will become world guru one day, has been found.

So who was the boy and what was the outcome of the theosophical movement? To know more, please go on page 2.

Notes:

[1] Maitreya is the next avatar of Buddha. The last Buddha was Shakyamuni Buddha (Gautama Buddha)

[2] Theosophical Society was started by Helena Blavatsky, Henry Olcott, William Judge and 16 others in 1885.

[3] Kuthumi, also known as Koot Hoomi, as per Henry Olcott and Helena Blavatsky, was a Kashmiri Hindu Spiritual Leader, who physically lived in Tibet. There is a lot of scepticism whether in real Kuthumi existed or this was a made up person by Helena, i.e. Henry Olcott (Koot) and Alan Hume (Hoomi).

[4] Charles Webster Leadbeater from Stockport, Cheshire, was a priest of the Church of England. He got spiritually aligned and got affiliated to Annie Besant

[5] The term Dharma should not be confused with religion. Dharma is more about righteousness and individual’s duty. The do’s and don’t are in to the same.

[6] Master Morya – Master Morya (Maurya or El Morya). As per Helena the mahatma’s previous life was linked to the Maurya dynasty.
