Śri Rādhā Raman Ji

The story of Śri Rādhā Raman Ji and his temple in Vrindavan, India, is a tale of divine manifestation. The deity emerged from the Kali Gandaki river in Nepal and was brought to Vrindāvan by Śri Gopāla Bhatt Goswāmi. The deity’s unique features and divine presence continue to captivate devotees from all around the world.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : The Meaning of Rādhā Raman

Rādhā Raman means the lover of Rādhā rāni, the main consort of lord Śri Krśna and the epitome of love.

Śri Rādhā Raman ji is the deity of a prominent temple in Vrindāvan, India. The form of this deity has attracted many people across the world. People come from all over the world for the darshan.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : The History

Śri Gopāla Bhatt Goswāmi, the disciple of Śri Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and one of the six goswamis of Vrindavan, was in grief after his master went abode. The lord came to his dream and told him to visit Nepal and take a dip in the famous Kali Gandaki river.

During his first dip in the river, Goswāmi ji noticed twelve Shāligrām shilās (rocks) coming to him, which he put it back in the river. During the second dip, the shilās approached him again, prompting him to return the shilās to the river. When he immersed his water pot in the river for the third time, the twelve shilās miraculously appeared inside. Hence, he carried them along with him to Vrindavan, started worshipping it, and offered daily prayers to the Shāligrām.

One day a merchant came to his home and donated shringār for the deity, i.e. jewelry and clothing. He prayed and wished that the Shaligram could transform into the form of Śri Krśna, allowing him to put these on the deity.

After a few days, during his daily prayers to the Shāligrams, he saw that one of the shilās had transformed into a deity of Krśna, holding a flute in effect granting Goswāmi ji’s wishes.

The deity is referred to as a swayambhu swaroop, or self-emerging form, as it emerged naturally rather than through creation. The temple, dedicated to the deity Rādhā Raman, was established around 1599 AD.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : The Deity

The deity of Śri Rādhā Raman Ji is a tribhanga and is a tri-murti.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : Tribhanga

The deity had a perfect bend in two places, which resulted in a perfect figure of Krishna bent in three places, hence the name Tri-Bhanga or Tri-Bhangananda.

Tri-bhanga is also a popular posture in Indian classical dance.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : Trimurti

There are three forms of Krśna in Rādhā Raman ji’s swaroop. The beautiful mukhārvinda (face) is of the form of Govind ji, the chest part is of Gopinātha ji and the feet are of Madan Mohan lāl ji’s swaroop (form).

It is said that the deity was carved by Śri Krśna’s great grandson, Vajranābha.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : Where is Rādhā ji’s Swaroop?

In the Rādhā Raman ji’s temple, only Śri Krśna’s deity is installed and Radhā ji’s murti cannot be seen. It is said that Rādhā ji turned into Śri Krśna, and hence the deity is of Rādhā rani herself, hence there is no need for Radhā ji’s deity.

It is also said that Rādhā rāni is present but in the form of golden chhatra (umbrella) over the head of Śri Rādhā Raman ji.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji : Amazing Facts

When Rādhā Raman ji is happy, one can see his teeth as well on the mukhārvind (face). The deity has been carved so very well that even the fingernails can be seen.

The fire for Rādhā Raman ji’s food preparation was lighted when the temple was built and has never been required to ignite again. It is said that Śri Gopāla Bhatt Goswami lighted this fire after reciting holy mantras.

Many renowed scupltures have tried to make an exact replica of Rādhā Raman ji’s deity but has never been successful. This is due to the Tribhanga structure and the central line passing through the navel. It is not possible to create a stable, self-standing idol with all the properties of Rādhā Raman ji deity. Which proves that the deity originated by itself and was not prepared by anyone.

All other eleven Shāligrāms are offered prayers till date and the devotees can do their darshan. If you request the pujāri ji at the mandir, then he will guide you to the darshan of the Shāligrams.

The place where the deity emerged is within the premises of the temple, and can be seen. The 500 year old tree where Śri Gopāla Bhatt Goswami used to hang the Shāligrāms is also within the premises.

When Aurangzeb was destroying the Hindu temples, majority of the deity’s were moved out of Vrindāvan for its protection. Śri Rādhā Raman ji, however, never left Vrindāvan. The temple and its premises were too small for Aurangzeb’s army to consider this as an important temple. Or possibly it was Rādhā Raman ji’s love for Vrindavan and Kishori ji that He never wanted to leave Vrindāvan.

Śri Rādhā Raman Ji and I

Śri Rādhā Raman ji’s swaroop is my favorite. We had the privilege of serving our thakorji, Śri Madan Mohan Lāl ji and Śri Gopināth ji, since childhood at our mandir in Surat. Maybe that is where my love for Rādhā Raman ji originates from, these two deities in this one swaroop.

I would love to have a full size painting of Śri Rādhā Raman ji in my living room so that I can be with Him every moment, and my younger one, Krishnakeli, has told me that she will one-day paint this for me. My love for Śri Hari may not be as powerful as it was for Śri Gopāla Bhatt Goswāmi, but I am positive that Śri Rādhā Raman ji will eventually manifest at our home and in our lives too.

Have you visited the mandir? Is there anything you would want to share? Any personal experiences or personal stories about the mandir or the deity you’d like to share with our readers?

Śri Rādhā Raman ji ki jai, Śri Vrindāvan dhām ki jai, Rādhe Rādhe.
